The Hydrogen Adige Valley project has officially entered operation in Bolzano, Italy, introducing a 2 MW electrolyser to support green hydrogen production and the expansion of SASA’s hydrogen-powered bus fleet.
The Hydrogen Adige Valley has begun operations in Bolzano, marking an important milestone in the development of sustainable public transportation and hydrogen mobility in northern Italy. The project integrates renewable electricity generation, green hydrogen production and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure into a coordinated energy ecosystem designed to support zero-emission public transport.
Developed through a collaboration between public transport operator SASA, the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and energy utility Alperia, the facility was completed one year after construction began on June 25, 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen the region’s hydrogen infrastructure while supporting the transition toward cleaner public transport solutions.

2 MW Electrolyser Supports Green Hydrogen Production
At the center of the Hydrogen Adige Valley project is a 2 MW electrolyser designed to produce green hydrogen using renewable electricity. The facility connects renewable energy resources with hydrogen production infrastructure, creating a local supply system for hydrogen-powered public transport vehicles.
By integrating hydrogen production and refuelling capabilities, the project establishes an important foundation for supporting SASA’s expanding hydrogen bus operations in Bolzano and the surrounding region.
SASA Expands Hydrogen Bus Infrastructure
The new hydrogen facility is designed to support the growing hydrogen-powered bus fleet operated by SASA, one of the key public transport providers in South Tyrol. Access to locally produced green hydrogen is expected to play an important role in supporting the operational requirements of these vehicles.
The integration of hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure also represents a step toward reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels in public transportation, while supporting the deployment of zero-emission bus technologies.
Alperia and Bolzano Strengthen Renewable Energy Integration
The Hydrogen Adige Valley initiative brings together expertise from the public transport and energy sectors. SASA contributes its experience in bus operations, while Alperia supports the project’s energy-related development alongside the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
This collaboration demonstrates how regional authorities, energy providers and transport operators can work together to develop integrated hydrogen mobility solutions. Connecting renewable electricity with local hydrogen production is a central element of the project’s approach.
Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure Supports Bus Operations
In addition to hydrogen production, the Hydrogen Adige Valley incorporates refuelling infrastructure intended to serve hydrogen-powered public transport vehicles. This combination of production and distribution capabilities is essential for establishing a practical hydrogen supply chain.
The facility is expected to support the operational needs of SASA’s hydrogen buses while providing a foundation for the continued development of hydrogen mobility infrastructure in the region.
Bolzano Advances Zero-Emission Public Transportation
The launch of Hydrogen Adige Valley represents another step in Bolzano’s efforts to develop more sustainable transport systems. By combining renewable electricity, green hydrogen production and public transport applications, the project demonstrates an integrated approach to zero-emission mobility.
With its 2 MW electrolyser and dedicated hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, Hydrogen Adige Valley is positioned to support SASA’s growing hydrogen bus fleet and contribute to the wider development of hydrogen-based public transportation in northern Italy.
