Elon Musk plans focus on electric bus system

The Boring Company excavates a series of networks of urban tunnels that would circulate cars that would roll on a kind of rails. The initial Test Tunnel, located in Hawthorne, CA, is being used for the research and development of The Boring Company’s tunnelling and public transport systems. The first section of the Hawthorne tunnel, including O’Leary Station, was completed in December 2018 and cost $10 Million. Musk described how The Boring Company’s urban tunnel system “would have thousands of small stations the size of a parking space that would take you very close to your destination, and be subtly integrated into the structure of a city.”

Besides Musk believes public bus operations can be reinvented and increase its speed like never before. “I think it can go about 150 miles per hour, in an underground, autonomous way,” he wrote, “an electric bus that automatically changes tunnels and rises, that’s a bus.”

In the Netherlands a few years ago there was the ‘superbus’ created by former astronaut Wubbo Ockels who died in May 2014, which could achieve a speed of up to 250 km/h on normal roads. This superbus was tested in Europe and China.

The Boring Company has already shown illustrations of a system that would lower cars from the street level to the underground level where a network of tunnels would be found that would carry the vehicles at high speed. But Musk, who also heads Tesla and SpaceX, says that those who do not have cars have priority.

“We will continue to transport cars, but only after all mass transit needs are met,” Musk said in a tweet. “It’s a matter of courtesy and equanimity, if someone can not buy a car, then they should go first.”
