Third generation Mercedes-Benz Tourismo launched

The new Tourismo has a Cw value of 0,33 – as low as the Mercedes-Benz SLK sportscar. According to Mercedes-Benz it should result in a reduced fuel consumption by around 4.5%. The body of the New Tourismo has been redesigned to help minimize the Cw value and also the engineers succeeded in reducing the weight of the coach. Including the known engine OM 470 with efficiency package, which was introduced in summer 2016, the fuel reduction can amount to as much as seven percent, is the forecast by Mercedes-Benz.

The power range of the 10.7 liter OM 470 has been extended with a new top-of-the-range engine with 335 kW (456 hp). Also new to the Tourismo RHD is the compact in-line six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 936 with a displacement of 7.7 liter and output of 260 kW (354 hp). With new optional equipment items such as Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) or Eco Driver Feedback (EDF), fuel consumption and thus also emissions can be reduced still further. Also the Tourismo can be equipped with a stop/start system which will result in a further reduction of fuel consumption.

The new Tourismo is more or less assembled with parts of other vehicles from the Mercedes-Benz stables. De headlights are from the Actros truck, the fog lights from the Antos, the led rear lights are donated by the Citaro, one of the two dashboards one can choose from, finds its origin in also the Actros, the other one has distinctive Setra-looks and also the chassis has some Setra-signatures. The rear of the coach is the same as from the Travego SHD which now is produced only for the Turkish market. One can say the new Tourismo is a product of synergy. And no there will not be a Tourismo SHD as Schick responded to questions during the press-conference. For the top range Daimler has the Setra TopClass.

Although the Tourismo has al the obligated safety systems on board, the emergency braking system Active Brake Assist 3 (ABA3) is optional. Recently Mercedes-Benz presented its ABA4 already in the Actros and this system recognizes pedestrians and performs an emergency stop without hesitation. Impressive to witness. According to Mercedes-Benz technicians the implementation of ABA4 for coaches will take some time, because it requires different settings and software to handle the data from the radar it uses. A coach does not move in the same way a truck does. But they expect to have it ready in the near future.

In terms of passive safety Mercedes-Benz has improved the Front Collision Guard (FCG) to protect driver and co-driver in the event of a collision. The coach’s completely new annular frame construction provides maximum survival space for both passengers and driver should it overturn sideways.

The production of the new Tourismo will start after this summer. The ‘old’ Tourismo stays available for countries where not yet Euro 6 is required, because it can be equipped with an Euro 4 or 5 engine.
