The order covers high-floor, low-floor, and articulated vehicles built on Volvo’s electric platforms. It includes 31 Luminus high-floor buses based on the Volvo BZR chassis, 12 Luminos low-floor buses built on the Volvo BZL platform, and 10 Volvo 7800 Electric articulated buses. All units are produced in Mexico. The model was launched in 2023. The country has just committed to allow only zero emission bus and truck sales by 2040.
Volvo to deliver electric buses in Guadalajara, Mexico
As of end September 2025, according to the figures from E-Bus Radar, backed by ZEBRA alliance, the country had 849 electric buses in operation (over half of those being trolleybuses), with Yutong covering a 65 percent market share.
The vehicles are designed for urban routes and will primarily rely on night charging, with daytime top-up charging available when required through CS2 connections. Although this project focuses on vehicle delivery rather than a full turnkey approach, Volvo Buses will support operations through its national service network, ensuring maintenance coverage and uptime support.
Guadalajara has previous experience with Volvo buses, including the articulated fleet that launched the city’s first BRT corridor 15 years ago. Field tests conducted for the new project compared electric bus performance and informed the final configuration selected for this order.
