Hamburger Hochbahn has launched trial operations at Hamburg’s first depot dedicated exclusively to electric buses in Meiendorf. The testing phase began on October 19, 2026, ahead of the facility’s planned official commissioning in mid-December, marking another step in the city’s transition toward electric public transportation.
Hamburger Hochbahn has taken a new step in the electrification of Hamburg’s public transport network by starting trial operations at its new electric bus depot in Meiendorf. The facility, designed exclusively for electric buses, entered its initial testing phase on October 19, 2026.
During the trial period, up to ten electric buses and approximately 20 employees will operate from the new depot. The testing phase will allow Hochbahn to evaluate operational processes and prepare the facility for its scheduled commissioning in mid-December.

Hamburg’s First Fully Electric Bus Depot Enters Testing Phase
The Meiendorf facility represents an important milestone in Hamburg’s efforts to expand electric bus operations. Unlike conventional bus depots, the new site is dedicated entirely to electric vehicles, supporting Hochbahn’s transition toward more sustainable public transportation.
Initial operations will involve a limited number of electric buses and staff members, allowing the transport operator to assess the depot’s readiness before regular operations begin. The trial phase is expected to provide valuable operational experience ahead of the official opening.
Up to 10 Electric Buses and 20 Employees Involved in Trial Operations
According to the initial operational plan, up to ten electric buses will be based at the Meiendorf depot during the testing period. Approximately 20 employees will participate in the trial operations, supporting the transition to the new facility.
The phased introduction provides an opportunity to test day-to-day depot activities under operating conditions. These preparations will help Hochbahn establish the necessary processes before the depot enters its next operational stage.
Hochbahn Targets Mid-December Commissioning
Following the launch of trial operations on October 19, Hochbahn is preparing to officially commission the Meiendorf electric bus depot in mid-December 2026.
The new facility will strengthen the infrastructure supporting electric bus operations in Hamburg. As the city continues its transition toward cleaner public transport, dedicated electric bus depots are becoming increasingly important for accommodating battery-electric fleets.
The Meiendorf project also highlights the role of specialized depot infrastructure in supporting the wider adoption of zero-emission buses in urban transport networks.
Electric Bus Depot Supports Hamburg’s Sustainable Transport Transition
The introduction of Hamburg’s first fully electric bus depot marks another development in the city’s public transportation electrification efforts. By establishing infrastructure exclusively for electric buses, Hochbahn is preparing its operations for the growing importance of zero-emission mobility.
With trial operations now underway and official commissioning scheduled for mid-December, the Meiendorf depot is set to become a new component of Hamburg’s electric public transport infrastructure.
